On this day
In 1812 French and Russian armies met at the Battle of Borodino; in 1813, in a newspaper article in Troy, New York, the nickname “Uncle Sam” was first used to denote the United States; in 1838 Grace Darling and her father rescued survivors from the wreck of the steamship Forfarshire off the Farne Islands; in 1986 Desmond Tutu became Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa; in 1901 the Boxer rebellion in China ended with the signing of the Boxer Protocol.
Nature notes
A bird that is still going around in family parties after nesting is the pied wagtail. The males are black and white, the females are more grey and white, while the young birds are predominantly grey with a yellowish tinge. You find them in fields with cows or sheep, or in places such as garage forecourts. They run about or walk with a jaunty air, sprinting forwards or leaping up when they see a fly they want to catch. They move their long tails up and down all the time and fly off in sweeping curves, making a loud “chissick” call. As autumn advances, the family flocks will break up and some individuals will take up a territory on their own along a riverbank. However, on winter evenings many of them — even amounting to hundreds — pour into communal roosts, sometimes in reedbeds, but also often in large trees in the centre of towns, where they appear to enjoy the warmth.
